Huntress

I had a great day today. Mom and dad took me for a walk at Zorinsky Lake . There were soooo many great smells! One of my favorites was all the deer poo that was on the ground!

We walked into the brush and trees so dad could place his newest geocache. Along the way I was sniffing and checking out what was hidden under the snow and grass. Every once in a while I would stick my snooter in the snow cuz I smelled something really good. Mom and dad thought it was "cute". Whatever!! I was simply being the supreme huntress that I am. After all, I did survive on my own for some unknown amount of time! Buuuut, then stuck my snooter in the snow and grass, and I came up with a critter in my mouth!!

A SNACK!!!! Oh my goodness, I was sooo excited!! I caught a vole!!! I was just seconds away from chewing my new found snack, when dad made me drop it!! He pulled me away from it, and I watched it crawl away, back under the long grass. I couldn't believe he didn't let me eat it!! I mean seriously, I found it, I caught it, I deserve to eat it! But nooooooooo.

Then mom was worried that it was hurt really bad and would crawl away and die a horrible death. That's what happened to a rabbit that Sam caught. Mom was not happy then either. Mom said dad should have let me go ahead and eat it, so it wouldn't have to suffer some poor agonizing death just like the rabbit. But, the more she thought about it, the more she realized that wouldnt' be a good idea since it might have caused some sort of illness or another tapeworm or something like that. Then she was glad dad made me drop it. Dogonally, I still would have liked to eat it, since I was the supreme hunter who caught it!

Oh well, it was still a good outing anyway. And, best of all, I had a great time sniffing all the cool smells, and checking out all the deer poo along the trails we were following. I guess that makes up for the loss of my snack. And, I was admired by some people I came across along the way.

We caught and killed a squirrel once - we did't get to keep it either. See what training has done for you? If you didn't know "drop", you could have ignored your dad.

He made you drop it? Honestly. You caught it, it's yours. Possession is 9/10ths of the law.
(Darn law textbook!!!)

I hate that "leave it" command. Mom and Dad used to use that on me when I would try to eat all the frogs that had been run over on the street.

Hrumph! That's so unfair! I had a MOLE once, but Mom made me drop it. Does that mean I had a mole removed? Hee hee hee!

No fair! She could have at least brought it home to put in the freezer and then stuffed it in a KONG.

Woo there Holly~
Sorry about woo missing out on a tasty vole snack. I caught something with a long tail on it awhile back, Mom called it a mouse. It wasn't as lucky as your vole. Although, I didn't know mice could fly. Mom made it fly clear away from the kennel so we wouldn't fight over it.
Glad woo had fun on your geocache escapade.

That's not fair. You caught it, you should be able to keep it.

Dad doesn't let me keep the rabbits that I catch. My sister Tia (at the bridge) caught a squirrel once. Actually, she caught the same squirrel twice. She dropped it when it bit her but then she caught it again to teach it a lesson. I never saw Momma call the vet so fast.

That's totally not fair that you couldn't eat it. We know what "drop it" means but we don't pay any attention. No way are we gonna drop something we hunted down.

Good job, Holly! Keep your instincts sharp!

You know what, though? Those humans that admired you? If your dad told them you'd just had a vole snack, they may not have liked you as much.

People can be dumb like that.

Hi Holly,

I was just at Franki's blog thanking her for my cool postcard, and I saw she sent you one too - how cool is she! What a classy gal!

I don't thinks its fairs that you weren't allowed the fruits of your labour. It's hardly fair, finders keepers right?

I don't understand why the humans won't ever let us keep the snacks we help ourselves to!
